Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre is thrilled to announce a major redevelopment of Mini Q, its much-loved gallery for children aged 0-6 years.

For over 20 years, Mini Q has captivated young visitors, offering a unique space for play-based exploration and discovery and this redevelopment will engage and inspire the next generation of curious minds.

The new Mini Q will take children on an adventure from Ngunnawal Country to the coast to meet a huge – but friendly! –octopus, play with water in the mangroves, climb amongst coral and step aboard a fun-filled ship.

Mini Q will be temporarily closed from 3pm on Sunday 1 June 2025 to October 2025 to allow for the installation of new, immersive experiences that reflect the latest in early childhood learning and STEM education, while building on the popular elements of waterplay, role-play and activity-based learning.

While Mini Q is temporarily closed, Questacon is offering an alternative offering for our youngest scientists – Mini Shed in Gallery 5 – a space where curiosity takes flight and creativity knows no limits. This hands-on space invites little explorers to build, experiment, experience and play with endless possibilities.

Get ready to play, learn and discover at the new Mini Q!

More information about Mini Shed

In the Mini Shed children will dive into loose parts play, designing their own inventions with recycled materials, or test their creations on the wind table, watching them soar and learning about forces and motion.

Sensory play tables will allow children to get hands on and experiment with materials to build cognitive and motor skills and imaginative play will spark creativity allowing children to invent role play and problem solve like a scientist.

Every activity encourages problem-solving, imagination, and discovery – engaging young minds to develop confidence and a love of exploration. Come tinker, test, and let your ideas take flight!
