About

In this FREE workshop you will:

  • Get hands-on with aeronautical engineering and activities from the ‘A Long Way Down: Designing Parachutes’ unit.
  • Develop effective strategies to teach STEM content, and skills, to meet the learning needs of your students.
  • Gain the confidence to teach STEM in your classroom through the engineering design process.

After the workshop, we’ll send you a resource kit and unit of work so you can run Engineering is Elementary in your classroom. You’ll also be connected to a national community of practice for ongoing collaboration and support.

Places are limited.

What to expect

In A Long Way Down: Designing Parachutes, students will explore aeronautical engineering. Over the course of the unit, students will learn about air resistance, the history of flight, parachute design and gain an understanding of the work that aeronautical engineers do.

Students will investigate how variables such as parachute size, materials and suspension line length affect the stability, speed and accuracy of a parachute during its descent.

With a specific purpose in mind, students will use the Engineering Design Process to ask, imagine, plan, create and improve their own parachute designs.
